Weekly Journal/Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
After a couple inches of snow overnight, it has warmed up and is raining lightly. Most of the snow has melted.

I am thinking...
What an incredibly mild winter we have had with only one real snowstorm early on. I don't think the thermometer has dipped below zero.

I am thankful...
For the warmer weather which makes my beloved cheerier as he doesn't like cold or snow much. (So why do we live in the northcountry???)

In the kitchen...
This is date night so I won't have to make dinner. However, the tea kettle is simmering and blueberry scones await my beloved's return home home from the office.

I am wearing...
A dark brown turtleneck sweater with a bootlength corduroy skirt, dark brown tights and flats, gold locket and earrings and hair is up. Also wearing Camille Beckman's Lavender, a lovely gift from my neighbor who shares my love of lavender.

I am creating...
Spent a fair amount of time in the gardens getting a headstart on spring clean-up which is good exercise and invigoratingly refreshing to be out and about.

I am going...
To sip a cuppa Stash's Licorice & Spice tea as I write, a new discovery. Used to hate licorice, especially black jelly beans when I was growing up but this is delicious and healthful.

I am wondering...
About the sad decline of the family and the future, yet knowing the God is ultimately in control.

I am reading...
Emily Dickinson's poems
along with some other poetry, the Scriptures and Puritan writings

I am hoping...
To cut our electric bill by doing laundry only a couple times a week in larger loads, using the dryer less and shutting off even more lights. Most have low wattage bulbs which helps. I often Swiffer rather than vacuum, recycle and reuse and seldom buy anything I don't really need. Have cut my gas useage and grow a large majority of our food.

I am looking forward to...
Saturday with my daughter/s when we usually do lunch and explore some place new. When they were small, most every day we planned "an adventure" or something special they would like to do, like a walk, a visit, baking together, etc.

I am learning
What it means to "rest" in Scripture.

Around the house...
The fire is flickering, teakettle simmering, and the classic piano music of Irish composer John Fields is playing softly. I don't know what it is about his music.

I am pondering...
Ways to make caring for the gardens ever more efficient. A quick calculation floored me as I realized I have close to a thousand feet of walks and several hundred feet of hedges. Caring for so many gardens and so much lawn without outside help is a challenge but it is a healthy endeavor and certainly more fun that the treadmill!

A favorite quote for today...

"What humbugs we are, who pretend to live for Beauty, and never see the Dawn!"
- Logan Pearsall Smith

One of my favorite things...
Fresh flowers or even a sprig of ivy in a bud vase to root.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Busy, busy, busy!

A peek into my day...
Late last Sunday afternoon we went for a nice drive and happened into this newly restored restaurant in a small mill town hotel for brunch in the sunny window overlooking the lake. It was absolutely delightful with white linen covered tables, roses, carnations and baby's breath in small vases and scrumptious, inexpensive fare.
